Helping Children and Adolescents Cope with Disruptive Behavior Disorders

Click here to see the flyer for more event/registration details and information on the speaker

Disruptive Behavior Disorders are among the easiest to identify of all co-existing conditions, because they involve behaviors that are readily seen, such as temper tantrums, physical aggression, excessive arguing, stealing, and other forms of defiance or resistance to authority. These disorders, which include Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), often attract attention when they interfere with school performance or family and peer relationships, and intensify over time.

Through this presentation, Dr. Mervin Langley, of Aurora Behavioral Health, will help parents, teachers, and community members understand the common symptoms of ODD and CD, possible causes, and how these disorders are diagnosed. Dr. Langley will also share practical suggestions and strategies for audience members to use with their child(ren), how to support their child(ren) if they are demonstrating characteristics of these disorders, and possible interventions and treatments that are available. There will be a specific focus on strategies for managing anger and teaching children effective anger control skills. Interventions suggested are all evidence-based.

At the end of the presentation, audience members will have learned a variety of ways to help their child(ren) through problem-solving and coping skills, listening effectively, building self-esteem, and using “stress inoculation”. Audience members will also learn information about when to seek professional help for their child(ren) and what some possible available clinical treatment options are (i.e. medications, cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, etc.)
